Warning Signs You Shouldn't Ignore About Your Knee Health

Your knees are among the hardest-working joints in your body, supporting your weight and enabling movement throughout your daily activities. While occasional knee discomfort might seem normal, certain warning signs should never be ignored. Here are five critical indicators that it's time to consult an orthopaedic specialist.

1. Persistent Swelling That Won't Go Down

If your knee remains swollen for more than 48 hours after an injury or appears swollen without any apparent cause, it could indicate a serious underlying issue. Persistent swelling may signal cartilage damage, torn ligaments, or inflammatory conditions like arthritis that require professional evaluation.

2. Instability or "Giving Way" Sensation

Does your knee feel like it might buckle when you walk or climb stairs? This instability could be a sign of ligament damage, particularly to the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) or PCL (posterior cruciate ligament). Ignoring this symptom can lead to further joint damage and increased risk of falls.

3. Limited Range of Motion

If you're unable to fully straighten or bend your knee, or if the movement is accompanied by pain or a catching sensation, you may have a meniscus tear or loose cartilage fragments. These conditions can worsen over time if left untreated.

  1. I found this article really helpful, especially the point about swelling lasting more than 48 hours being a serious sign. The explanation of knee instability and ligament damage was easy to understand. It also led me to read more about Dr Prince Uchadia.
